In the Heart of It All: On a Mission For Good

February 15th, 2024

It’s never wrong to do right. There are plenty of local opportunities to volunteer – to give back and pay it forward. Volunteering doesn’t have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time. Even small gestures can mean so much. We’re especially proud to be part of the Savannah community.

Over the last few years, we do our part by sponsoring the Candler Clays Charity Shoot. It’s a heart-warming two-day event that benefits Advancements in Cancer Care that includes a charity clay shooting competition, live auction, reception, and wraps it all up with a Lowcountry Boil. Since the inception, the charity has raised over $2.1 million in support of innovations in care and a holistic approach to the well-being of our communities.

Our residents genuinely care about our neighborhood, the environment and each other. It’s part of what makes Savannah Quarters so special.

You can find a list of resources at the end of this blog.

Take Care of Your Environment, and It Takes Care of You

Keep Chatham Beautiful (KCB) is a non-profit organization formed in 2012. They believe that, since we’re fortunate enough to live here, we have the responsibility to be engaged stewards of our environment. KCB’s focus is on litter prevention, beautification, community greening, waste reduction and recycling. Your expertise and time can be put to good use for educational programs, litter pick-ups, recycling events, beautification projects, environmental concerns and more.

Words to Live By

“I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong….”

Those are the promises recited by Girl Scouts all around the world (fact: Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a worldwide family of 10 million girls in 146 countries). Did you know it all began right here in Savannah? Started by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912, when women couldn’t yet vote, the idea of starting an organization that encouraged girls to use their voice, embrace their strength and unlock their potential was game-changing.

You can help keep that trailblazing spirit alive.

Mentor the next generation of leaders by encouraging self-confidence and helping them feel strong, celebrated and valued. Some of the volunteer roles include Camp/Seasonal Volunteers, Adult Learning Facilitators, Special Event Volunteers and Troop Families and Friends.

If you can’t volunteer, remember that every little bit counts. Your generous donation can help pay for the membership fee for a young girl whose family may not be able to afford it, uniforms, pins, and patches or a year of service to an outreach troop of at-risk girls.

Go ahead and treat yourself to an extra box of Do-si-Dos. The net proceeds of Girl Scout Cookies go toward local troops’ activities and projects.

Serving Up Kindness

Food banks and soup kitchens are often the frontlines for keeping vulnerable and at-risk neighbors from going hungry and feeling isolated. A warm meal served by a warm heart does more than just fill a belly, it feeds the soul. There are several ways to help – from actually serving meals or delivering groceries to low-income seniors to distributing emergency food relief via a mobile food pantry.

Everyone Has Something Good to Give

Volunteering is a win/win opportunity. It’s a way to share in our good fortunes, make new friends, and encourage health and happiness. Here in the heart of it all, our residents are generous with their time, attention and random and selfless acts of kindness. Come home to Savannah Quarters, where like-minded, kind-hearted folks live.
