Start New Traditions This Season

November 8th, 2022

Traditions provide a connection for families and friends to create a sense of belonging. Some traditions are associated with religion, such as lighting candles for Advent or Hanukkah, or oil lamps for Diwali.

The holidays are just around the corner and are usually filled with traditions. Whether you’re a new resident or have lived at Savannah Quarters® for a while, this is a time for you to share old traditions across generations, and is also an opportunity to create new traditions that will carry special meaning for you, your family and your friends.

The Scent of Homemade Memories

There’s no better way to create a memory than through aroma. Our sense of smell may be a better memory trigger than our sense of sight. That whiff of pumpkin pie can transport you to grandma’s house. Fresh cut grass can bring you back to the thrill of that almost hole-in-one.

Fragrances and their association with feelings and memories often last a lifetime. Our brains store aromas and feelings as a single memory. Children associate scents with their homes and you can use this knowledge to make sure the scents of your home are fresh, comforting and relaxing. For many people, some of their best memories are associated with these scents:

Winter: pine, burning wood, snow, old books
Baking: bread, cinnamon, cookies, vanilla, chocolate, honey
Food: grilling steaks, boiling rice, gumbo, roasting turkey, coffee
Herbs/Spices: mint, sage, oregano, lemongrass, curry, thyme

It’s a common misconception that a smell must envelop you when you walk through the door. Keep in mind that you’re after a general feeling for your home and you also want to be considerate of guests who may have allergies or sensitivities to strong smells.

There are many ways to create your own signature scent for your Savannah Quarters home, even if you aren’t cooking or baking that secret family recipe. Candles and diffusers can be beautiful and decorative. Try this tip — next time you replace your furniture filter, add 10-20 drops of essential oil. The air will help disperse a subtle scent throughout your space.
