Employee Spotlight – Stephen Hendrix, Golf Course Superintendent

Some people come to Savannah Quarters® for a visit. They discover a warm and welcoming oasis. And they never leave. That is certainly the case for Stephen Hendrix, the longest tenured employee at Savannah Quarters. Since Stephen has given us so much in his 22 years of service, it’s only fitting that we turn the spotlight on him and get to know this family man and golf turf pro.
Originally from Citronelle, Alabama — not far from the Mississippi border — Stephen attended Auburn University where he became a lifelong Auburn college sports fan. There, he graduated with a degree in Agronomy and Soils (a.k.a. Turfgrass Management).
Today, we are so grateful that Stephen’s home turf is here at Savannah Quarters. “I’ve been here from the community’s earliest days,” he says, adding, “I have enjoyed watching all of the changes over the years.”
As golfers know, keeping a premier course like ours in top condition requires continuous maintenance along with the leadership and guidance of a true expert at the helm. Stephen is our resident expert. With a deep sense of humility, he acknowledges that it takes more than one person to keep our course looking the way it does. He says, “I am fortunate to have a dedicated and talented staff who care deeply about making Savannah Quarters a premier Lowcountry golf destination. To accomplish that, we start our days early, usually at sunup. Depending on weather and golf play, we could be applying sand to the course, repairing ball marks and filling divots. You name it.”
When asked about his favorite part of the job, Stephen says, “I love interacting with people — members and staff. And I love just being outside in such a beautiful climate.”
Outside of work, you’ll find Stephen cherishing the time he gets with his family. Recently, the Hendrix family (no relation to Jimi) took a trip to see The Rolling Stones, one of Stephen’s favorite bands of all time. It shouldn’t surprise you that The Stones were belting it out 22 years ago on Stephen’s first day at Savannah Quarters and they will likely still be performing 22 years from now.
